Little Dresses for Africa ~

March 31, 2011

Fifteen Ladies have been busy “Sew & Sews” today. They are sewing Little Dresses for Africa.   A ministry started  several years ago, sews girls’ dresses out of pillow cases. A second effort called “Britches for Boys” makes shorts in all sizes.  They started early and worked all day.  Tomorrow they’ll be back at it again! [nggallery id=8]

Old Barns and Barn Raisin’ ~ Resurrected

March 25, 2011

The “Over-60′s” Luncheon was a great success.  About thirty-five guests enjoyed a meal prepared by Becky Sehr.

Betty Mann’s ‘Old Barns’ presentation offered over 50 images of barns around the country including barn raising, barn art, round barns and some Rock County local barns.  Photos of the Fitzer Barn and barn art on an old Wessels barn are offered below.

'The Fitzer Barn' at its new home on the Rock County Fair Grounds, Luverne, MN

Stan and Gert Wessels’ old barn provided an example of Barn Art. As Tammy Wessels Makram tells the story, many years later, “I believe that we were supposed to do some painting of the barn and I just decided to have a little fun with it. I don’t know where I came up with the idea of what to paint. A farm theme seemed appropriate.”

Pictured by their completed task are (l. to r.) Twyla (Wessels) Schilling. Tammy Wessels Makram, Tim Wessels, and Terry Wessels (front). The four Wessels "T's" completed the 'paint the barn' task with creativity.

The ‘barn art’ spilled over to Stan and Gert’s granary and at least one gas barrel.  Many passers-by stopped to enjoy it, including a bus load of folks passing thru.

We have added a Barn Raising photo and one of the Fitzer barn moving to the Fairgrounds.

“Over-60’s” Lunch to have “Barn Find” on March 22nd

March 10, 2011

At 12 noon on Tuesday March 22, the Over Sixties group will share a Potluck meal and be treated to a program on “Old Barns.”

Betty Mann as featured in the Daily Globe (photo by Brian Korthals/Daily Globe at )

Betty Mann will present a fascinating collection of photos of Old Barns. Betty is president of the Rock County Historical Society and an avid teacher and curator of local history.

Some barns are local — from Rock County and surrounding areas.  Others are from all over the country.  All the barns are uniquely crafted buildings. Both historic and fascinating, the program will visit a heart-warming era of hard work, craftsmanship and imagination that has shaped the prairies and rural America.

We hope to add some barn photos here on a future posting.  Thanks to Betty Mann for sharing her interests and creativity.

Our special thanks also to Becky Sehr for her planning, meal prep, and hosting the Over-Sixties luncheons, for lo, these many years!
